Position Description

The Linux Engineer will be responsible to day-to-day systems engineering duties (build/run) with a focus on Linux systems. The engineer should be well-versed in Red Hat and derivatives (RHEL, CentOS, Oracle Enterprise Linux, Fedora): design, build, maintain, orchestrate, policy, and enterprise management. In-depth knowledge of VMware ESX would be preferred as well as an operational understanding of Dell Poweredge servers.

Additional technologies: Veritas Netbackup, Spacewalk and/or RHN Satellite, Puppet and/or Chef, Docker and/or LXC, container orchestration. In-depth understanding of enterprise authentication and authorization. Ability to work well with application engineers, developers, and QA analysts. Working knowledge of scripting languages: (required) Bash, Python; (bonus) Ruby, Perl, Go; (nice-to-have) C, C , JavaScript/Node, HTML, PowerShell. Working knowledge of basic infrastructure services: SMTP, DNS, FTP, NTP, SSH, LDAP, Kerberos, TLS, SSL, HTTP, and SNMP. Databases: MySQL, Oracle, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL.

  • Defines, designs/architects, builds,implements and maintains Linux systems and servers; responsible for serveradministration and engineering:

  • Builds Linux servers andconfigures networks; both physical and virtual.

  • Proposes and implements systemenhancements (software and hardware updates) that will improve the performanceand reliability of the Linux system

  • Provides ongoing care/maintenanceof servers, reviewing logs and managing issues

  • Manages load configuration ofcentral data communication processor and makes recommendations for purchase orupgrade of data networks

  • Coordinates terminal orders andcable installation, network system planning, installing, monitoring, testing,and servicing

  • Approves action requests andspecifies purchase requirement, "spec'ing" out hardware and gettingcost quotes

  • Negotiates and places orders withcommon carriers

  • Trains employees on systemprocedures and proper utilization

Key Differentiators

  • Detailed knowledge of Linuxsystems administration and the definition, design, and implementation ofnetwork communications and solutions

  • Basic understanding of four ormore Linux operating platforms; advanced skills and understanding of two ormore platforms that are deployed and supported

  • Subject matter expertise (specialist)in one platform and in one or more clustering technologies

Minimum Requirements

4 years experience in UNIX systems administration

Critical Skills

  • Candidate must possess a validRHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer), equivalent, or show proficiency at thatlevel.

  • Candidate will be required todemonstrate scripting skills of one or more of the following languages: Bash,Python, Ruby, Node.js. The scripting demonstration will include: environmentalvariables, conditional statements, loops, I/O redirection, text filtering andregular expressions, arrays, variable types, text output, user input, andpipes.

  • Candidate will be required todemonstrate Linux proficiencies related to and including: signals, boot process(x86_64), boot process troubleshooting (including Grub 2, kernel, and initrd),disk schedulers, block device management, compare/contract current productionquality file systems, network configuration and troubleshooting, system updatesand general maintenance, and troubleshooting common Linux system issues.

  • Candidate must be able tocompetently discuss concepts related to: DNS architecture and data flow, systemorchestration, IP tables, system profiling, capacity planning, kernel tuning,continuity (backups, restores, data integrity), multi-datacenter systemsmanagement, and basic network operations.

4-year degree in computer science or related field or equivalent experience
