Current Need

McKesson Pharma is seeking a Sr. Manager, Controlled Substances Distribution Center Compliance to join their team.

This person can sit in any of the Distribution Center locations in the U.S.

Position Description

Role will focus on promoting and facilitating distribution center compliance with the federal and state controlled substances laws on behalf of the thirty-one distribution centers across US Pharmaceutical. This role is focused on distribution center compliance for its storage, handling and shipment of controlled substances, and not the Know Your Customer/Suspicious Order Reporting regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing guidance, in conjunction with US Pharma legal team, to the distribution centers for federal and state controlled substances laws as these relate to the distribution center network (recordkeeping, reporting, security and licensing). Working with the Distribution Operations teams to memorialize this guidance in the form of policies and standard operating procedures and monitor compliance through the STARs audit process and other monitoring efforts.

  • Assist the distribution centers with DEA cyclic inspection readiness and other controlled substances inquiries by federal and state regulatory authorities. Support consistent response and alignment across the DC network with distribution centers and other stakeholder groups (e.g., Legal in the context of information/subpoena requests).

  • Work with other internal functions (IT, Legal, Distribution Operations) to support and promote consistent reporting, response and execution for controlled substance compliance across the distribution center network.

  • Track controlled substances government inquiries and inspections and distribution center reporting (e.g., 106 theft and loss reports) for internal reporting and trend analysis purposes.

Minimum Requirements

5 years experience in compliance group and demonstrated leadership skills

Critical Skills

  • Strong DEA background or experience in Pharma manufacturing DEA compliance

  • Must have Controlled Substance Regulatory knowledge (Federal and State)

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills

  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal

  • Strong data analysis skills, experience working with Excel and data mining

  • Candidate must be OK with 30%-40% travel

Additional Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge in federal controlled substances laws and regulations (Title 21 CFR 1300 to end) as they relate to the physical pick, pack and shipment of controlled substances (other than Know Your Customer and Suspicious Order Reporting requirements are managed by a separate team). Knowledge of similar state controlled laws and regulations will be considered favorably.

  • Good oral and written communications skills, analytical skills and

  • Ability to communicate to, and influence decision making at, all organizational levels.

  • Strong project management skills

  • Knowledge of compliance and ethics frameworks and principles, and experience in compliance programs based on US federal and state laws


4 degree in Compliance, Legal, HR, Business or related field or equivalent
