Job Summary

Lead the development and implementation of category strategies to drive sales and profit growth for categories defined by senior management as most critical to achieving the annual financial and merchandising objectives for the Retail Banners National brand categories. Responsible for achieving and delivering complete P&L budgeted results for the Category Management function within Retail Banner Management.

Section A – Specific Responsibilities

  • Set up, lead, coach and develop a skilled and effective Category Management team that are passionate about retail sales and service

  • Transition Category Management across all retail banners to ensure economies of scale

  • Manage the vendor relationships and negotiate to achieve the maximum results for all National brands across retail banners

  • Lead the development of category strategies for all elements of the merchandising mix (i.e. product mix, pricing strategies, promotional mix/events, service strategies)

  • Work very closely with the retail banners’ merchandising, home health care, operations, store planning & pharmacy teams to ensure that strategies and tactics are aligned to support store-level execution

  • Source out new programs that will deliver more sales and profitability

  • In conjunction with merchandising teams, develop and execute the completion of planograms on an annual and interim basis to ensure optimal product mix and shelf placement

  • In conjunction with merchandising teams, develop suggested retail price zones for the members

  • Develop effective and efficient promotional tactics that are executed flawlessly

  • Conduct monthly analysis of AC Nielsen data to measure category and brand trends within the portfolio

  • Monitor POS / McKesson purchase reports to isolate problems and opportunities and take appropriate action to ensure retail banner businesses are tracking to budget

  • Review category budgets at a required frequency and report back to management remedial action required to achieve budget

  • Review research supplied by vendors to exploit marketing and merchandising opportunities

  • Implement category plans with critical scheduling, budget development and ongoing scheduling and performance monitoring

  • Constantly review and follow critical path schedules for promotional flyers and special event programs

  • Oversee editing of promotional flyers and make appropriate changes

  • Liaise with McKesson to ensure all products and pricing arrangements are accurate

  • Monthly in-store promotions for all retail banners

  • Liaise with all internal departments on pricing and invoicing issues for vendors and retail banners

  • List new products with mckesson and communicate these listings and de-listings in stores

  • Attend quarterly business reviews with vendors, representatives, and senior staff to ensure mutual profitable business

  • Review weekly communications to all retail banner stores on new product entries, deletions, or important developments

  • Prepare and deliver special presentations to retail banner members across all businesses

  • Respond promptly and efficiently to all stakeholder inquiries to address any issues

  • Promote the benefits of investing in independent retail banner stores to all vendors in the category portfolio

  • Generate revenues for VR co-op advertising, O and A, including promotional flyers, proprietary magazines, special events

  • Negotiate trade show issues and funds for annual trade shows

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Section B – Key Requirements

  • University degree in relevant discipline

  • 10 years’ managerial experience

  • 5 years’ experience managing relevant product category

  • Strong business acumen, ability to see big picture while juggling details

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication both written and verbal

  • Superior vendor management skills and negotiating capabilities

  • Superior organizationanl skills

  • Strong leadership, coaching and mentoring skills

  • Excellent strategic planning and negotiation skills

  • Ability to effectively liaise with key stakeholders, principally Katz Senior Management, Tier 1 ventors and Katz operations

  • Financial analysis and planning skills
